Given the concern about the decrease in the delivery of medicines in the country due to delays in payments by the EPS pharmaceutical managers, the national pharmaceutical industry has come to the forefront by ensuring continued access to essential medicines for Colombians.

Despite the significant increase in the industry’s portfolio payment period, which has increased from 90 to 120 days, local manufacturers remain committed to ensuring the constant supply of medicines.

The Colombian Association of the Pharmaceutical Industry (ASCIF) has highlighted that this is not an isolated situation, but they have called for coordination between all actors, including the national government, to find solutions and ensure the adequate flow of resources throughout the chain.

“This industry has not presented critical input supply events or significant interruptions in drug production logistics,” said Clara Isabel Rodríguez, executive director of ASCIF. Rodríguez also highlighted that the Colombian pharmaceutical industry continues to produce more than 80% of the medicines consumed in the country, demonstrating its ability to operate even in challenging circumstances.

In addition, the importance of dialogue tables with the national government was emphasized as a key opportunity to address the problems that affect the industry, including the large pending portfolio with pharmaceutical plants by managers and EPS.

Although only 16% of the medicines consumed in Colombia are imported, the national pharmaceutical industry has reiterated its commitment to local production and the constant supply of essential medicines for the population.
