The North Carolina Tar Heels continued their dominance in ACC field hockey, defeating the Virginia Cavaliers 4-1 on Friday, November 7, at Trager Stadium in Louisville, Kentucky, to claim their ninth straight conference championship and a remarkable 28th ACC Championship in program history.
Louisville, KY – The Tar Heels showcased a potent offensive attack and a stifling defense to secure the victory, solidifying their position as a national powerhouse. The team now awaits their fate in the upcoming NCAA Field Hockey Selection Show.
Mendez Shines as Tournament MVP
Dani Mendez, named the Most Valuable Player of the 2025 ACC Field Hockey Championship, led the charge for North Carolina with a pair of goals against her former team. Mendez opened the scoring just 3:19 into the contest, expertly placing a shot into the top-right corner of the cage following an assist from Charly Bruder. She extended the Tar Heels’ lead in the second quarter, capitalizing on a North Carolina penalty corner with an assist from Isabel Boere.
“Mendez was absolutely instrumental in our success today,” a senior official stated. “Her ability to create scoring opportunities and finish under pressure is truly exceptional.”
Tar Heels Build a Commanding Lead
Bruder further bolstered the Tar Heels’ advantage in the second quarter, converting a penalty corner into a goal to make it 3-0. Assists on Bruder’s 17th goal of the season were credited to Coco Courtright and Ryleigh Heck.
The Cavaliers managed to respond less than 90 seconds later, with Mia Abello scoring on a penalty stroke. Abello, who previously secured a game-winning goal for Virginia in their semifinal shootout, logged her eighth goal of the season.
Second-Half Dominance Seals the Victory
North Carolina quickly regained control in the opening minute of the second half when Reese Anetsberger scored off an assist from Mendez, pushing the lead to 4-1. The Tar Heels’ defense then completely shut down the Cavaliers’ attack, preventing any shots on goal during the remaining 30 minutes. Goalkeeper Katie Wimmer, entering the game at halftime, posted a spotless second half.
