India’s javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra has withdrawn from the Commonwealth Games to be held in Britain, the Indian Olympic Organization said.

Neeraj Chopra had won a silver medal at the World Athletics Championships in the United States on Sunday. It is to be noted that Neeraj Chopra is the defending champion after winning the gold medal in javelin at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast.
“Our Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra will not participate in the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham,” the Indian Olympic Federation tweeted. The decision was taken because of his fitness issues. We wish him a speedy recovery and support him in this challenging time.”
World Athletics Championship silver medalist Neeraj Chopra suffered a hamstring strain. Therefore, it was reported at the time that a decision on his participation in the Commonwealth Games would be taken depending on the severity of his injury.

Neeraj Chopra became the 2nd Indian to win a medal in athletics at the World Athletics Championships. Last year in 2003, Anju Bobby George had won the medal in athletics. Then Neeraj Chopra won the silver by throwing the javelin at a distance of 88.13 meters.
In an interview to the English daily The Indian Express, Indian Olympic Association General Secretary Rajiv Mehta said, “Neeraj Chopra underwent an MRI scan after his injury. Doctors have said that Neeraj Chopra needs a month’s rest.

Following this, the Indian Athletics Association was contacted this morning saying that Neeraj Chopra is not 100 per cent fit. Doctors have advised him to rest for a month as he has injured his thigh. Therefore, I informed that Neeraj cannot participate in the Commonwealth Games.
