Scorsese Mentors Ghaywan,Shaping powerful New Film ‘Homebound‘ Exploring India’s Caste System
A guiding hand from cinematic legend Martin Scorsese helped Indian filmmaker neeraj Ghaywan refine his latest project,”Homebound,” a poignant exploration of India’s complex caste system and the motivations behind rural migration.
the collaboration between the two directors came to light during a panel discussion at Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles on Saturday, where Ghaywan detailed Scorsese’s role as both executive producer and mentor. Actors Ishaan Khatter and Vishal Jethwa, who star in “Homebound,” were also present.
According to Ghaywan, Scorsese’s involvement began with a script read and evolved into a thorough, iterative process. “He started out with reading the script, and he told me how to go about it,” ghaywan explained.”We did a back-and-forth, and then again at the end stage he saw the first cut, and then he did a couple of rounds and he would guide with every step… I had to have the focus, so he gave me that focus… He gave life to all of our stories.”
The film’s genesis lies in a deeply affecting true story first reported in The new York Times. “Homebound” was inspired by an op-ed essay detailing the experiences of friends during the COVID-19 pandemic. Ghaywan felt compelled to return to filmmaking after a decade-long hiatus following his critically acclaimed debut, Masaan, to tell this story.
“It was a true story that happened in India, and it was a story of friendship and what happened to these friends during the journey [during] the pandemic,” Ghaywan said. He further elaborated on the broader themes the film seeks to address, stating, “What makes migrants leave their homes in rural India or across the world? It’s not just jobs, it’s not just money, it’s also existential.”
“Homebound” aims to move beyond statistics and abstraction, seeking to humanize the experiences of marginalized communities. As Ghaywan explained, there was “an urgent need to humanize their experiences so that we could see their pain and see what goes through and show connection as a strong force of empathy.”
The director also emphasized a deliberate effort to challenge conventional portrayals of marginalized groups. “I wanted to dismantle the victimhood of marginalized communities and to bring in the joy, bring in the human nature of it, like present them as humans and not just victims of stay subjugation or oppression,” he said. “There are also people who love their families, love each othre.
