Nepal Cricketer Sandeep Lamishan Found Guilty of Sexual Harassment
Kathmandu – Nepal’s international cricketer Sandeep Lamishan has been found guilty of sexual harassment by a single bench of the Kathmandu District Court. The court has rejected the argument that the victim was underage at the time of the incident. Sentencing will take place at a later date and Lamishan is currently out on bail.
The trial began on Sunday and the verdict has sent shockwaves through the cricketing community. Lamishan, who recently led his club Parsa to victory in the Nepal Pro Championship, has been a prominent figure in Nepalese cricket.
Last September, sexual harassment allegations surfaced against Lamishan, who was then playing for Jamaica Tallawahs in the Caribbean Twenty20 League. The Nepal Cricket Association suspended the player following the case and his club also took action to remove him from the team. He was later taken into custody by the police upon his arrival at the Kathmandu airport.
While on bail, Lamishan made a return to the Nepal team in the Cricket World Cup League Two, playing against Namibia and Scotland. However, in a sign of the impact of the allegations, no opponent shook Lamishan’s hand during the matches. He also participated in the World Cup Qualifiers and Asia Cup.
The guilty verdict has raised questions about the future of Lamishan’s cricketing career, and it remains to be seen how this case will impact the sport in Nepal.
