Netflix Responds to Diddy’s ‘Reckoning’ Claims

Netflix Denies Diddy’s Claims of “Corporate Retaliation” in ‘Sean Combs: The Reckoning’ Docuseries

A Netflix spokesperson has firmly refuted allegations made by Sean Combs’ legal team that the recent docuseries, Sean Combs: The Reckoning, was produced as an act of “corporate retaliation,” escalating a brewing legal battle over the controversial project.

The dispute centers on claims that Netflix deliberately sought to damage Combs’ reputation after he declined a documentary proposal spearheaded by co-CEO Ted Sarandos. According to a cease-and-desist letter sent December 1, Combs’ attorneys asserted that Sarandos then turned to Combs’ longtime rival, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, to produce a series intended as a “vindictive response.”

“The claims being made about Sean Combs: The Reckoning are false,” a Netflix spokesperson told Deadline on Tuesday night.

The letter alleges that 50 Cent paid individuals to discredit Combs and that damning footage of the music mogul, captured prior to his September 2024 arrest, was “stolen.” Netflix maintains that the footage was obtained legally. The streamer insists the project is unrelated to any prior discussions with Combs and that Jackson, while an executive producer, does not have creative control.

“This is not a hit piece or an act of retribution. Curtis Jackson is an executive producer but does not have creative control. No one was paid to participate,” the spokesperson stated.

Diddy’s Allegations of a Targeted Campaign

The core of Combs’ argument, as outlined in the December 1 letter to Netflix’s top legal executive David Hyman, is that Netflix intentionally chose Jackson to punish Combs for rejecting Sarandos’ initial documentary proposal in 2023. The letter claims Sarandos insisted on maintaining creative control over the project, a condition Combs refused.

“Thus, the choice of Mr. Jackson to produce the Program was Netflix’s vindictive response to that rejection — an attempt by Netflix and Mr. Sarandos to ensure a one-sided character assassination, rather than a balanced and accurate portrayal,” the letter reads. The correspondence further suggests Netflix aimed to exploit the existing animosity between Combs and Jackson, framing the situation as “one famous black man attacking another.”

Combs’ team also alleges that Jackson has a long-standing “vengeful crusade” against the rapper and that individuals were incentivized to provide damaging testimony. They claim the docuseries will be filled with “false and defamatory statements” and violate Combs’ privacy rights.

Netflix Defends Footage and Production

Netflix has strongly defended its acquisition and use of footage depicting Combs discussing strategies to counter the numerous allegations against him. Director Alexandria Stapleton stated that the footage, captured in September 2024, was obtained legally and with the necessary rights. The footage reportedly shows Combs instructing his lawyer to “find someone that’ll work with us that has dealt in the dirtiest of dirty business.”

The streamer also emphasized that the project has no connection to past conversations with Combs. “The project has no ties to any past conversations between Sean Combs and Netflix,” the Netflix representative added.

Legal Showdown Looms

As Combs prepares to pursue formal legal action, Netflix appears prepared to defend its position in court. Combs’ representatives indicated on Tuesday that his legal team is reviewing its options following the release of the four-part series.

“After watching the series and now knowing what is in it, Sean’s team is reviewing its legal options and will decide shortly how best to respond,” Combs’ reps told Deadline.

Currently incarcerated at Fort Dix FCI in New Jersey, Combs is serving a four-year sentence following a conviction on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution. He is scheduled for release in June 2028, though an appeal is underway. Adding to his legal challenges, a Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department probe was recently opened regarding a 2020 allegation of sexual battery against a music producer, further diminishing the likelihood of a presidential pardon.

Despite the legal threats, Netflix anticipates Sean Combs: The Reckoning will appear on its domestic Top 10 chart on Wednesday, despite the lack of publicly available viewing figures. The series’ international performance will be revealed next week. However, it appears the legal battle is only just beginning, potentially adding a fifth episode to the “Reckoning” – this time, in a courtroom – to the numerous civil suits already facing Combs related to allegations of sexual assault, violence, and other misconduct.
