Kochi: The first service of the modern LHB (Link Hoffman Bush) coaches of the Ernakulam-Nizamuddin Mangala Express was held on Sunday. After years of waiting, Mangala, the daily train from Ernakulam to Delhi, has got new coaches. Hibi Eden MP also arrived at the station on Tuesday for the maiden voyage. Area Manager Nitin Norbert and Assistant Divisional Mechanical Engineer MK Subramanian were also present.
The solution is to replace the old rusty coaches of the Mangala Express with long-standing passengers. Several petitions had been filed seeking permission for new coaches for long distance trains departing from Ernakulam. The issue was also raised during a meeting with John Thomas, General Manager, Southern Railway. Hibi Eden MP said that he was happy that the railways had kept their promise.
LHB coaches made with German technology are fast and safe. These are the coaches that do not collide with each other in the event of an accident. These are coaches made of stainless steel. The coaches are equipped with CCTV cameras, water filters, bio-vacuum toilets, toilet occupancy lights and smoke detectors.
Mangala’s three sets of coaches will be the LHB in the first phase. Three more rakes will be LHB soon. The cost of a coach is Rs 2.5 crore. LHB coaches will be allotted for the Ernakulam-Patna train in January, said Area Manager Nitin Norbert.
