New earthquake now in Kefalonia

by time news

Earthquake now 3.5 Richter in Kefalonia at 22:55 on Sunday 3/3.

In the last few hours, many small earthquakes have been recorded in Kefalonia and all of them are centered around the same sea area in the northern part of the island.

Thus, there is concern among the residents of Kefalonia about the cluster of earthquakes that occurred recently on the island, which were centered in the same sea area.

As seismologist and Research Director of the Geodynamic Institute Gerasimos Papadopoulos noted in his post, the seismic activity in Kefalonia “started days ago but intensified today with more earthquakes and larger magnitudes that reached 3.5 and 3.4”.

He appears reassuring but emphasizes that constant re-evaluation is required.

“At the moment I do not see any particular risk, but from now on a constant re-evaluation is required as new data will emerge”, he says characteristically.

Speaking earlier to ERT, Mr. Papadopoulos noted that “the seismic activity in Kefalonia started on February 27 but intensified today.”

Continuing, he pointed out: “We are monitoring the evolving seismic activity. There are two possibilities in such cases that we consider:

One is what we call a “cluster series”, that is, relatively small magnitudes that are approximately equal to each other 3.5, 3.4, 3.3 Richter, as is the current case and the second, the most dangerous, to be aftershocks. I’m not in favor of the second view,” he clarified.
