Al-Marsad newspaper: Scientists have developed a new drug that they described as “wonderful” to treat an aggressive type of cancer that is difficult to treat.

Thousands of people are diagnosed with mesothelioma worldwide every year. It is a cancer that develops in the lining that covers the surface of some organs of the body, especially the lining of the lungs, and it is aggressive and deadly. According to the Independent

Survival rates

Scientists led by a team from Queen Mary University of London said their new treatment quadrupled three-year survival rates.

According to results published in the journal JAMA Oncology, those who received peggargiminase in combination with chemotherapy survived for an average of 9.3 months, compared to 7.7 months for those who received placebo and chemotherapy.

Scientists said this is the first successful combination of chemotherapy with a drug targeting cancer metabolism that has been developed for this disease in 20 years.

They note that ADI-PEG20 works by depleting arginine levels in the bloodstream — for cancer cells that can’t make arginine due to loss of the enzyme, this means thwarting their growth.
