New Music Friday: Benny The Butcher, NBA YoungBoy, and a Wave of Rising Rap talent
A diverse collection of new releases arrived this week, offering a sonic palette to bridge the gap to the holiday season. While perhaps not as packed as last week’s offerings, the latest New Music Friday delivers a compelling mix of established artists and emerging voices in the hip-hop landscape.
Leading the charge is Buffalo native Benny The Butcher, a rapper known for his unflinching portrayal of urban life. He’s released a double-single, “Iight Iight” and “Supernatural” featuring Estee Nack, as part of his new The Butcher EP. According to sources, the EP continues Butcher’s tradition of delivering raw, gritty narratives.
The soundscape shifts with Larry June’s new single, “The Smooth Kind,” a Bay Area offering that lives up to its name. Simultaneously, NBA YoungBoy is generating buzz with “Top Cobain,” a preview from his forthcoming album Slime Cry that notably references the late Kurt Cobain. This unexpected invocation of the Nirvana frontman has sparked conversation among fans and critics alike.
Beyond these headliners, a robust lineup of established artists contributed to the week’s releases. New music arrived from Snoop Dogg,Polo G,DaBaby,Mozzy, and Dave East. However, the week also shines a spotlight on a new generation of rappers poised for breakthrough success. Kenny Mason, affiliated with JID, and Marco More, a lyricist championed by J. Cole, are among the rising stars dropping new projects. Fellow Atlanta artist Leisure Dim 700 also contributes to the influx of fresh talent.
