New online training in nutrition care for diabetes

by time news

During the webcast, ‘De dietician in the lead role’, journalist Dana Ploeger launched a new online training course on nutrition and diabetes especially for dieticians. Both the well-watched webcast and the online refresher training have recently become available online on the website of the Dutch Diabetes Federation (NDF).

More attention for lifestyle care

Society as a whole attaches increasing importance to lifestyle and lifestyle care. This offers opportunities for the profession and the role of the dietitian and for the collaboration of dieticians with other healthcare professionals. Nutrition plays a very important role in regulating diabetes, but customization is required. The NDF nutritional guideline, on which the online training is based, says: ‘There is no optimal diet that works best for every person with diabetes.’ In other words: there is no such thing as a ‘one size fits all approach’, but handles can be provided to support care providers and patients in making decisions about appropriate nutritional care.

Online training on nutrition & diabetes is accredited

The online training is free and accredited. He deals in particular with the challenge that is recognizable for every dietician: How can you translate the guideline into person-oriented nutritional care in practice? Topics that are discussed include the use of the NDF Conversation Card Lifestyle, a basic coaching attitude, ‘deciding together’ and the scientific underpinning of person-oriented nutritional care.

Person-centred care is on the rise anyway because a healthier personal lifestyle – eating healthier, exercising more, not smoking, being frugal with alcohol and working on a healthy weight – not only helps to regulate diabetes, but in practice can even prevent type 2 diabetes and other disorders.

Emphasis on new dietary guideline NDF

In line with the new guideline, online refresher courses place less emphasis on the individual nutrients, but much more on the total diet. Different dietary patterns appear to be suitable for the prevention and treatment of diabetes. The emphasis for dieticians is on the quality of the food, which is personally adjusted, taking into account personal wishes, cultural preferences and the right amount of energy.

Both webcast and training are a collaboration of NDF, NVD and Springer Healthcare, made possible in part by Abbott. Both are free and accredited and can be found on education platform
