According to a new survey published today (Thursday) by the European polling company ‘YouGov’, it appears that Foreign Minister Liz Truss is widening the gap with competitor Rishi Sunak in the battle for the leadership of the Conservative Party and the British Prime Ministership.
According to the survey, Tras leads the former finance minister by 32 percent, with 66 percent of party members supporting Tras compared to only 34 percent for Sunak. According to the survey, 13 percent have not yet decided who they will support – but these were not counted in the survey.
The rivalry between the foreign minister and the former finance minister is increasing as time passes, among other things due to a dispute over dealing with the severe economic crisis in Britain.
In addition, Sunak, who recently served as finance minister, turned his back on Johnson a few weeks ago and announced his resignation from the government due to Johnson’s lies – which finally led to Johnson resigning out of choice as fifty officials resigned from their positions following Sunak.
Members of the conservative party are currently voting for their preferred candidate of the two and results are expected on September 5 – Monday in two and a half weeks.
If Sunak succeeds in winning the Prime Ministership, he will be the first Prime Minister of Great Britain of immigrant origin – India. In addition, Sunak is one of the richest politicians in the UK.
If Foreign Minister Truss occupies the prime minister’s throne, she will become the third woman prime minister – after Margaret Thatcher and Theresa May.
The candidate who wins will become the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, and will lead the Conservative Party in the elections expected at the beginning of 2025 at the latest.
According to the survey – Johnson is still more popular than the two candidates and would have won them – if he had contested he would have won by 46% compared to 23% for Sonak and 24% for Terrass.
