Table of Contents
Despite economic headwinds, a new survey reveals that Austrians are entering the new year with a generally positive outlook, though spending habits vary significantly by region. The average Austrian is expected to spend €170 on New Year’s Eve celebrations, with a strong emphasis on food, festive traditions, and a desire for personal well-being in the year ahead.
New Year’s Spending: A regional Divide
As the calendar nears December 31st,preparations are underway across Austria, but the financial commitment to the festivities isn’t uniform. The latest data, compiled by the Consumer Check trade association through monthly research conducted by Reppublika Research, shows a clear regional disparity in spending.
Tyrol and Vorarlberg lead the nation with an average expenditure of €193 per person. Vienna follows closely at €181,while Carinthia and Styria residents plan to spend around €174. Salzburg and Upper Austria are slightly lower at €159. At the lower end of the spectrum, Lower Austria and Burgenland residents anticipate spending an average of €153.
The majority of the budget is allocated to essential celebratory items.Food and lucky charms account for 67 percent of purchases, followed by alcoholic drinks at 54 percent. Sweets represent 31 percent of spending, with non-alcoholic beverages at 21 percent and pyrotechnics at 18 percent.
A Nation Focused on Self-Improvement
Beyond the immediate celebrations, the survey reveals a strong desire for self-improvement among Austrians as they look toward 2026. A significant 70 percent of respondents indicated a commitment to prioritizing self-care in the coming year.
This focus manifests in several key areas:
- Exercise and sport: 59 percent of those surveyed plan to increase their physical activity.
- Healthy Eating: 57 percent are prioritizing a healthier diet.
- quality time: 55 percent aim to dedicate more time to friends and family.
- financial consciousness: 55 percent intend to be more mindful of their expenses, with 44 percent specifically aiming to save more money.
Economic Concerns Loom despite Optimism
While one in five austrians are entering 2026 with “great confidence,” a more cautious undercurrent runs through the national sentiment.Only 12 percent expressed worry about the year ahead. However, the continued economic uncertainty is casting a shadow over expectations for improvement.
According to the trade association, only 5 percent of employed Austrians believe their jobs will be fully secure in 2026, while 15 percent feel somewhat or very insecure about their employment prospects. Furthermore, just 29 percent anticipate an increase in their income, and a similar percentage believe the domestic economy will experience a recovery.
“Although Austrians are generally optimistic about the year 2026,the economic conditions are still largely seen as difficult,” stated a trade spokesman. “Against this background, there are sadly no signs of a fast turnaround to the positive for retail at the moment.”
