Newcastle United Midfielder Sandro Tonali Suspended for 10 Months due to Gambling Violation

Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali has been handed a 10-month ban from football after being found guilty of breaching gambling rules by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC). The 23-year-old Italy international will not be allowed to participate in any football activity, including matches for both Newcastle and his national team, during this period.

Tonali, who joined Newcastle from AC Milan in a record-breaking €70 million transfer deal in July, has also been fined €20,000. In addition to the suspension, he will have to undergo eight months of rehabilitation, including therapy and make 16 public appearances in Italy at amateur clubs, federal training centers, and addiction charities.

The violation occurred as Tonali was found to have placed bets on events organized by the FIGC, FIFA, and UEFA, which is prohibited under Article 24 of the FIGC’s sporting justice code. This violation carries a punishment of a three-year ban and a minimum fine of €25,000.

Although gambling is legal in Italy, it is essential to place bets only on platforms recognized by Customs and Monopolies agencies. The use of illegal platforms can result in a three-month prison sentence or a fine ranging from €51,000 to €516,000.

Tonali’s legal team has been seeking a quick resolution to the case, and his ban was confirmed by the FIGC on Thursday. Two other players, Juventus midfielder Nicolo Fagioli and Aston Villa’s Nicolo Zaniolo, have also been investigated in connection with the same case. Fagioli received a seven-month ban after reaching an agreement with the FIGC, while Zaniolo denied using the platforms for betting.

Tonali’s agent, Beppe Riso, revealed that his client had been struggling with a “gambling illness.” He expressed gratitude towards Newcastle for their continuous support. The club’s head coach, Eddie Howe, has reiterated their commitment to Tonali and mentioned that it was his idea for the midfielder to do a lap of St. James’ Park after their recent victory over Crystal Palace.

The ban comes as a significant blow to both Newcastle United and Tonali, who was expected to play a key role in the team’s midfield. It remains to be seen how the club will cope with the absence of the talented midfielder and how Tonali will bounce back from this setback.
