NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban are officially divorced, bringing an end to their 19-year marriage and dissolving one of entertainment’s most visible power couples.
A Quiet End to a High-Profile Union
The Oscar and Grammy winners finalized their split Tuesday in Nashville, Tennessee, after filing for divorce in September.
- A Tennessee judge signed off on the divorce, citing “irreconcilable differences.”
- Both Kidman and Urban waived their right to a court appearance.
- The couple had already reached agreements regarding asset division and child custody.
- Kidman will be the primary residential parent for their two daughters.
Judge Stephanie J. Williams issued the order at a hearing Tuesday, stating that the couple’s agreements on asset division and child custody were sufficient to grant the divorce. What led to the split between Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban? The court filing indicated “irreconcilable differences” made continuing the marriage “impractical and impossible.”
Neither Kidman nor Urban attended the hearing. Representatives for both stars did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
A Surprise to Many
Kidman filed for divorce in September, a move that surprised many fans despite reports of “marital difficulties and irreconcilable differences” outlined in the filing. Notably, all legal matters concerning assets and the couple’s two teenage daughters were settled at the time of the filing.
Tennessee law requires a 90-day waiting period for divorcing couples with minor children before the divorce can be finalized. Kidman and Urban, both 58, share two daughters.
The divorce agreement stipulates that Kidman will be designated as the primary residential parent for their children, and the family will continue to reside in Nashville. The filing also indicated that neither party will require spousal or child support, and assets will be divided roughly equally.
From Los Angeles to Nashville and Beyond
Kidman and Urban first met in Los Angeles in 2005 and married the following year in Sydney, Australia. Throughout their two-decade relationship, they became a fixture on red carpets, with Urban frequently accompanying Kidman to the Oscars and Kidman supporting Urban at country music events like the Academy of Country Music Awards. While they occasionally acknowledged marital challenges publicly, few anticipated a divorce.
This marriage marked Urban’s first and Kidman’s second, following her marriage to Tom Cruise from 1990 to 2001. Kidman also shares two older children with Cruise.
The couple had publicly described some marital difficulties, yet there were still few outward signs the divorce was coming.
