The authorities of the Spanish city of Murcia had ordered in October 2022 the administrative closure of the nightclub where a fire broke out on Sunday that caused 13 deaths, a representative of the town’s mayor’s office stated this Monday.

In January 2022, the cessation of activity was determined and in October “an execution order for the closure” of the premises was issued, Antonio Navarro, head of Urban Planning for the Murcia city council, in the southeast of Spain, indicated in a press conference.

The cessation of activity was decreed because the company that managed the premises only had a license for one nightclub, the Teatre, while it had carried out work to open another in the same space, the Fonda Milagros, where the deadly fire occurred, he explained.

“The last step that was taken (…) was the execution order in October 2022 and from there, effectively, there is a breach by the company, obviously,” Navarro reiterated.

City hall officials received many questions from journalists about why the venue had not been effectively closed, given that it is a well-known nightclub in the city that advertises its activities on social media.

“We are talking about an unprecedented tragedy and I insist that we are going to act forcefully to clarify all responsibilities for what happened to the final consequences, whatever the cost,” Navarro stressed.

The fire at the Fonda Milagros nightclub, frequented by people of Latin American origin living in Murcia, broke out around 6:00 am (04:00 GMT) on Sunday and was of “extreme” violence, according to the authorities.

The thirteen bodies were found in that nightclub, although the fire spread to the adjacent nightclubs, Teatre and Golden.
