NIU Gymnastics Joins Mountain West Conference in 2026
Northern illinois university’s gymnastics program will transition to the Mountain West Conference beginning with the 2026-27 academic year, the university announced Thursday. This move aligns the Huskies’ gymnastics team with their football program, which joined the Mountain West in January, and marks a important shift in the athletic landscape for the DeKalb-based university.
Strategic conference Realignment
The decision comes after NIU secured a membership with the horizon League in March for its athletic programs excluding football, wrestling, and gymnastics. However, the university has now charted a course to consolidate key programs within the Mountain West, signaling a strategic focus on conference affiliation. Earlier this week, NIU also revealed its wrestling program will compete in the Pac-12, demonstrating a diversified approach to athletic conference partnerships.
Why is NIU making these changes? Northern Illinois University is strategically realigning its athletic programs to enhance competitiveness and maximize exposure. After joining the Horizon League for most sports, the university determined that consolidating football and gymnastics within the Mountain West Conference, and wrestling in the Pac-12, would best serve those programs’ long-term interests.
A Positive Step for NIU Athletics
“we are very happy to have our gymnastics program joining the Mountain West,” stated a senior university official. “With football having already begun the transition,we know we have a great relationship with the conference and are excited to add gymnastics to that partnership.” the addition of NIU brings the total number of gymnastics programs in the Mountain West to four, joining Air Force, UC Davis, and San José State.
Who is impacted by this move? The primary beneficiaries are the NIU gymnastics athletes, who will gain access to increased competition and visibility within the Mountain West Conference. The conference itself will also benefit from the addition of a consistently prosperous program. The move impacts opponents within the Mountain West, adding a new competitive element.
Coach Teague Welcomes the Prospect
The head coach of NIU gymnastics, Dawnita ‘Nita’ Teague, expressed enthusiasm for the move. “This is a great opportunity for NIU gymnastics,” she said. “We appreciate the work that went into this move and are grateful to the Mountain West for the invitation to join their conference. This is a very exciting time for our athletes, and we are looking forward to competing with our new conference opponents.”
Teague, a distinguished figure in NIU athletics – inducted into the NIU Athletics Hall of Fame and named the university’s Female Athlete of the Year in 1981 – is currently in her second season as head coach. Under her leadership, the Huskies have consistently achieved success, qualifying for NCAA regional competition in each of the past 11 years, with multiple gymnasts qualifying in nine of those seasons. This established program is poised to contribute competitively to the Mountain West Conference.
How will this transition unfold and what is the expected outcome? The gymnastics program will officially join the Mountain West Conference for the 2026-27 academic year. The university anticipates increased exposure and competitive opportunities for its athletes. The move concludes a period of conference uncertainty for NIU gymnastics, providing a stable and promising future within the Mountain West.
