Under the slogan “There are no chickens,” calls to boycott the purchase of poultry and eggs in Egypt spread across social media platforms, in an effort to reduce their prices. However, the Vice President of the Union of Poultry Producers in the country considered that such campaigns “are out of place,” according to the “Cairo 24” website. ” the local.

The Egyptian newspaper “Al-Dustour” reported that social media pioneers launched a campaign under the title “No Chickens,” to boycott the purchase of poultry and eggs. In protest against the significant increase in their prices, after the success of the fish boycott campaign, which led to a significant decline in their prices.

The newspaper quoted one of the citizens as saying that the success of the “Let it Rot” campaign to boycott fish brought benefits, and it succeeded greatly, as prices fell unexpectedly.”

He added that this “created a new impetus for the “Blaha Chicken” campaign to boycott the purchase of chickens (poultry) and eggs, due to the significant increase in their prices over the past period.”

Local reports had indicated that the fish boycott campaign “started in Port Said Governorate on the Red Sea, and extended to more than 10 other governorates.”

Commenting on these developments, the Vice President of the Poultry Producers Union, Tharwat Al-Zeini, considered that the “No Chickens” campaign is “incorrect in principle, because poultry has no alternative like fish, whose alternatives are poultry and meat.”

He continued: “If a fisherman notices the presence of boycott campaigns, he will take a step called (fish overnighting) to sell it at any time, whether after raising, lowering, or stabilizing prices.”

He added in his interview with “Cairo 24”: “But this is not true with poultry, because if the time for slaughtering them passes (passes), the weight of the chickens decreases significantly.” Also, poultry does not accept storage or anything equivalent to it, because it is a live industry and is a cheap alternative to protein. If a citizen boycotts fish, meat, and poultry, what will he eat?

He stressed that “the stability of the exchange rate and the elimination of the black market have reduced feed prices in the country significantly, and the price of a ton of feed today has reached 23 thousand pounds (480 dollars), down from the price of 30 thousand pounds (about 626 dollars), because there are no two exchange rates in the country.” market.”

Al-Zeini warned that the demand for poultry in general “decreased,” pointing to the decline in the average price of per capita consumption, saying: “The average per capita consumption of poultry in Egypt reached 12 chickens per year, and only 100 eggs.”
