UN: Geopolitical divisions are undermining the work of the UN Security Council and all forms of international cooperation, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said. He also warned that cooperation and discussion would end in ‘G-nothing’ without even collective problem solving.

Guterres was speaking at the 77th session of the General Assembly at the United Nations headquarters on Tuesday. Geopolitical divisions undermine the work of the Security Council, undermine international law, undermine trust in democratic institutions and people’s trust, and undermine international cooperation of all kinds.

Guterres told the world leaders who gathered in person for a public debate at the UN headquarters after two years of the Covid pandemic that it cannot continue like this. Even various groupings like the G-20 established by some members of the international community are caught in the trap of geopolitical divisions.

No force or coalition can fire alone. No major global challenge can be solved collectively. We need a coalition of the world. Guterres also said the agreement that resumed grain exports through the Black Sea during the Russia-Ukraine war was the result of multilateral diplomacy.
