Mumbai: Shikhar Dhawan was once a reliable opener for Team India in ODI cricket. Currently playing only in ODI format, Dhawan’s strike rate and batting average are facing a lot of criticism. The absence of Dhawan’s name when the squad for the ODI series against Sri Lanka was announced yesterday has fueled speculations about the player’s future. It should be assumed that Dhawan’s name is not in the plans for the ODI World Cup, which will be hosted by India next year.

Shikhar Dhawan has struggled to find runs recently in Bangladesh and before that in New Zealand. Dhawan’s biggest threat is that Ishan Kishan is strong as an opener. Shubman Gill is the other opener in the squad apart from skipper Rohit Sharma. Ishan shone on the tour of Bangladesh with the fastest double century in ODI cricket. Aussie legendary pacer Brett Lee had earlier stated that he expects Ishan Kishan to be the opener in the next ODI World Cup. Lee’s words were that Ishan will definitely open in the ODI World Cup if he can maintain his consistency and fitness.

Thirty-seven-year-old Shikhar Dhawan has played 167 ODIs for Team India, scoring 6793 runs at an average of 44.11 and a strike rate of 91.35. This includes 17 centuries. Apart from this, Dhawan has played 34 Tests and 68 International T20s. He scored 2315 runs in Tests and 1759 runs in T20Is. The last Test was on 7 September 2018 and the last T20 on 29 July 2021.

ODI squad against Sri Lanka: Rohit Sharma (captain), Subhman Gill, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wicketkeeper), Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper), Hardik Pandya (vice-captain), Washington Sundar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Mohammad Shami, Mohammad Siraj, Umran Malik and Arshdeep Singh.
