‘Stranger Things’ Star Dampens Hopes for a ‘Byler’ Romance in Final Season

A highly anticipated resolution for the relationship between Will Byers and Mike Wheeler appears increasingly unlikely as the final season of Stranger Things approaches, according to recent comments from cast members. Fans hoping for a romantic “Byler” endgame may be disappointed, though the show promises a powerful exploration of their enduring friendship.

Doubts from the Cast

Finn Wolfhard, who portrays Mike Wheeler, previously expressed reservations about a romantic turn for the characters, suggesting it “wouldn’t feel that earned” at this stage in the narrative. Now, during a recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live, Noah Schnapp, who plays Will Byers, also appeared to downplay the possibility of a romantic connection.

“Oh man, are we live? Um,” Schnapp laughed when questioned about fan desires for a Will and Mike romance. “I think… I mean look, it’s like a real kind of authentic representation of a queer kid in the ‘80s. I’ve dealt with that myself, being in love with a friend and maybe they don’t love you back, or they feel differently.”

This statement, while not a definitive dismissal, doesn’t offer much encouragement to those invested in a “Byler” outcome. It suggests the show may lean into the complexities of unrequited love and the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ youth during that era.

A Focus on Enduring Friendship

Despite the diminished prospects for a romance, the showrunners are expected to emphasize the deep bond between Will and Mike. One source indicated that the final episodes will likely reinforce the significance of their long-standing friendship, which has been central to Stranger Things since its inception.

The actor expressed confidence in the creative team’s ability to deliver a satisfying conclusion. “I’m not gonna spoil anything,” he said. “But I think the Duffers close it really well.”

Release Dates for the Final Season

Stranger Things season 5 will be released in two volumes. Volume 2 premieres on Netflix at 8 p.m. ET on Thursday, December 25. Volume 3 premieres Wednesday, December 31, at 8 p.m. ET.
