18-year-old Nolan Wells was found dead on Horn Island in Mississippi on July 6, 2026, after going missing during a Fourth of July boat trip. GPS data shows his boat left the island on July 4, but Wells was not on it, and his body was discovered two days later. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death.

The body of 18-year-old Nolan Wells was discovered on July 6, 2026, after he vanished during a Fourth of July boat trip with friends. Jackson County coroner Bruce Lynd confirmed the body was Wells via dental records. Wells had left the mainland on July 4 aboard a boat that returned to its dock without him, according to GPS data obtained by CBS News. His family reported him missing that night, and a search involving the U.S. Coast Guard, the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, and the National Park Service began.

GPS records from the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, obtained by CBS News, detail the movements of the boat Wells was on. The vessel departed a dock at 9:56 a.m. on July 4 and reached Horn Island at 11:14 a.m. It left the island at 4:31 p.m. and returned to its original dock, later traveling into Fort Bayou before returning to the dock at 6:06 p.m. Later that evening, the boat went to the Fort Bayou boat launch at 7:19 p.m. The boat’s owner, his mother, and another individual reportedly with Wells cooperated with the investigation, according to the MSDMR report. Wells was last seen on the island at 3 p.m., as reported by attorney Ben Crump’s office, and his mother, Christine Wonsley, alerted authorities after he failed to return with his friends that afternoon.

A National Park Service ranger discovered his body on July 6. “There’s no evidence to suggest that he was dumped on an island and left for dead,” said Brian Trascher, an official with the United Cajun Navy, according to Fox News. Trascher stated the working theory is that he drowned, though the official cause of death has not yet been announced by authorities.

Family’s Call for Transparency and Independent Autopsy

Wells’ family has hired attorney Ben Crump to represent them, calling for a thorough and transparent investigation. Crump arranged for an independent autopsy in Washington, D.C. The autopsy performed at the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s lab on July 7 remained pending. Wells’ parents, Christine and Elmore Wonsley, have expressed that they don’t believe their son would have stayed behind on the island by choice, with Elmore stating, “I don’t believe he decided to stay on the island by himself. It just doesn’t — that’s not his character,” according to CBS News.

Conflicting Theories and Online Speculation

The United Cajun Navy’s search efforts relied on wind and drift patterns, with Trascher stating, “The wind and drift patterns tell a story.” The organization emphasized it was not leading the investigation, which remains under the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department has asked the public to come forward with any information.

Next Steps and Ongoing Investigation

The investigation into Wells’ death is still open and active. Once the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office investigation is complete, the district attorney’s office will present the case to a grand jury.

The family of Nolan Wells and attorneys Ben Crump and Eric Hertz held a news conference after meeting with the Jackson County District Attorney. As the family seeks answers, the focus remains on the investigation.
