CHENNAI: The board has decided to disconnect the cable of contractors who do not pay advance and rent in Urban Habitat Development Board apartments.

According to the Urban Habitat Development Board, there are 1.85 lakh houses in Tamil Nadu. Of this, the largest number of houses have been built in Chennai district.

The walls were damaged as cables were used to provide ‘TV’ and internet connection to homes. To maintain these, the Board is spending crores of rupees.

Thus, depending on the number of houses, the contract companies were urged to pay a deposit of Rs 50,000 to Rs 2 lakh and Rs 20 per connection per month.

But since 2011, many people have been operating illegally without paying deposit and rent. As a result, the board has lost several crores of rupees in revenue.

Accordingly, the Board has decided to sever the connections of the contract companies who do not pay the deposit, rent and arrears of rent.

For this, warning banners have been put up in Urban Habitat Development Board residences in North Chennai, Central Chennai and South Chennai.

Regarding this, Urban Habitat Development Board officials said:

We spend crores of rupees annually on maintenance. The Board has no revenue other than cable connection license revenue. We charge only 20 rupees per connection per month. Without paying this too, some contracting companies are operating illegally.

The license shall be extended on payment of the fee fixed by the Board. Otherwise, the tie-up will be severed and the license will be awarded to other contractors.

Thus they said.
