Discussion on Decriminalizing Underage Drug Users
The proposed decriminalization of underage drug users has sparked a heated debate, with concerns about potential risks rightfully raised. While various contexts exist for such a policy change, it’s important to note that drug use in Latvia is already de facto decriminalized. First offenses result in administrative penalties, not criminal ones.
The issue becomes more complex when considering repeated use and drug trafficking, which often accompany drug use and can lead to other criminal activities. This necessitates a comprehensive approach, including social and psychological support alongside legal frameworks.
Current limitations prevent drug users, even those who haven’t violated the law, from accessing necessary medical, psychological, and social assistance. While criminalization may not be the answer, providing adequate support and guidance remains crucial.
This initiative requires a multifaceted approach, including educational initiatives to tackle the underlying causes of drug use and empower individuals.
