It is one of the key destinations of this long Ascension weekend. Many French and foreigners go to the landing beaches in Normandy to discover an important page of history, one year from the 80th anniversary of the Allied landings.

79 years after the Normandy landings, the Botella-Ripplinger family decided to spend the Ascension weekend there. They came to admire the landscape, but above all to remember the war. “We still feel that gratitude”, explains the father, a former soldier. Nothing like seeing places to understand. For his children, it is a way of appropriating the memory of places.

Lots of American tourists

A communion shared with the many Americans on site, sometimes with a family link with the landing. “We came to France to travel, my father was injured there and I am overwhelmed with emotion”, explains an American tourism. A few hundred meters away is Omaha Beach in Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer (Calvados), where more than a thousand GIs perished. Each year, the landing beaches are trodden by five million visitors.
