Traditionally, the industry looks forward to the Golden Globes at the start of the trophy season – as a harbinger of the Oscars to come. And a German film is in the running.

The German war film “Nothing New in the West” is in the running for the Golden Globe. Director-writer Edward Berger’s drama was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film. There are four other candidates, including “Close” from Belgium.

The book by Erich Maria Remarque from 1929 describes the horror of the First World War from the perspective of a young soldier. Austrian Felix Kammerer plays the leading role.

Most recently, the Golden Globe went to Germany for best foreign film in 2018 with the NSU drama “Out of Nowhere” by Fatih Akin.

Nominations for the Association of Foreign Press Association (HFPA) awards in 27 film and television categories were announced Monday in Beverly Hills. The trophies are scheduled to be awarded on January 10th. (dpa)
