France is facing a significant cold snap this weekend, November 22 and 23, with widespread sub-zero temperatures and the risk of snowfall extending from the mountains to lower altitudes. A large portion of the country is already experiencing temperatures below seasonal norms, and conditions are expected to worsen before a slight warming trend arrives on Sunday.
Widespread Cold Weather Alerts
Currently, 70 departments across France are under yellow alert for extreme cold, snow, and ice, a warning that will remain in effect on Saturday. The current cold spell, which began mid-week, is expected to intensify, bringing hazardous conditions to many regions.
Snowfall Forecast: From Pyrenees to Île-de-France
Météo-France is forecasting snow showers at low altitudes and in plains areas, particularly in the Center-East, including Jura, Ain, Savoie, Haute-Savoie, and Isère. Snowfall is already occurring in the Pyrenees, with significant accumulations expected in Ariège.
The impact isn’t limited to mountainous regions. A disturbance moving across the west of the country will bring snowfall from Hauts-de-France to the south of the Massif Central, potentially leaving 2 to 5 centimeters of snow. “During the day, a disturbance progresses over the west of the country, and is accompanied by much milder air. Arriving in Normandy, it can give a little snow in the afternoon on the Orne,” a senior official stated.
Île-de-France, particularly vulnerable to snowfall, is expected to be affected Saturday evening. The first snowflakes are anticipated in Yvelines, spreading to Greater Paris overnight. “Snowfall can continue for 4 or 5 hours, giving accumulations of 1 to 5 cm of snow,” forecasters warn. The potential for freezing rain exists as milder air moves in, creating hazardous conditions. Snow at low altitudes could linger overnight, leading to icy roads.
Temperature Plunge: Cities Brace for Freezing Conditions
Temperatures are forecast to plummet across the country. Paris is expected to wake up to -1°C on Saturday, with a high of only 4°C to 6°C. Toulouse will experience similar conditions. Other cities facing particularly cold temperatures include Le Mans (-4°C), Clermont-Ferrand (-5°C), and Nancy (-6°C).
Mediterranean Winds and Atlantic Relief
While much of France shivers, the Atlantic coast will enjoy clear skies between Brittany and Gironde. However, the Mediterranean region will experience strong winds, with mistral gusts reaching up to 100 km/h.
Sunday’s Outlook: A Brief Respite Before Rainfall
Temperatures are expected to rise on Sunday, but the improvement will be short-lived, with significant rainfall forecast. Temperatures will reach 14°C in Bordeaux, 16°C on the Basque coast, 8°C in Paris, and 3°C in Strasbourg.
