Ajax will compensate Abdelhak Nuri’s family for € 7.85 million after the parties reach a compromise and there will be no need for arbitration in the Dutch association’s court, it was reported today (Tuesday). “I am happy that an agreement has been reached and we have solved the problem, we all understand the suffering of Abdelhak and his family,” said the former goalkeeper and current club general manager, Edwin van der Sar.

As you may recall, in July 2017 Ajax played against German Werder Bremen in preparation for the upcoming season when Nori, who was only 20 at the time, suffered a heart attack and collapsed on the lawn. The Dutch midfielder of Moroccan descent grew up in Ajax’s glorious youth department and was considered a great promise in his homeland. He has been through all of the Dutch youth teams and has already started to fit into the senior team.

In an investigation done after the unfortunate incident, it was found that the paramedics were late in using the defibrillator and as a result much damage was done to the player. Ajax has funded all of Nuri’s treatments to date and said it will continue to do so in the future. Despite this the family decided to sue the club on the grounds that he had received inappropriate medical treatment.

Following the incident Ajax retired the 34 shirt, with which Nuri played, and the Outstanding Actor Award of its academy was named after him. Donnie van de Bike grew up with Nuri in Ajax’s youth department, and when he signed for Manchester United in the summer of 2020, asked for the number 34 as a tribute to his old friend.
