Nvidia Reverses Course, Restores PhysX Support for RTX 50-Series GPUs

Nvidia has announced it is reinstating support for its PhysX technology on its recently released RTX 50-series graphics cards, addressing concerns from gamers who experienced performance issues with older titles. The move comes after the initial launch of the RTX 50-series without native PhysX support, a decision that sparked criticism within the gaming community.

Initial Rollback and Community Response

Earlier this year, Nvidia launched its RTX 50-series GPUs without support for PhysX, the long-standing GPU-accelerated technology responsible for realistic in-game effects like shattering glass, fluid dynamics, and atmospheric phenomena. This omission initially impacted performance in popular games such as Borderlands 2, Mirror’s Edge, and Batman: Arkham City. Some players reported frame rates dropping below 60fps as these titles were forced to rely on the central processing unit (CPU) for PhysX calculations.

“We heard the feedback from the community,” Nvidia stated in a recent release, “and with the launch of our new driver today, we are adding custom support for GeForce gamers’ most played PhysX-accelerated games, enabling full performance on GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs, in line with our existing PhysX support on prior-generation GPUs.”

The Root of the Problem: 32-bit CUDA Support

The original decision to drop PhysX support stemmed from the RTX 50-series’ removal of 32-bit CUDA support. This change prevented older games utilizing PhysX from leveraging the GPU for acceleration, effectively offloading the workload to the CPU. The impact was particularly noticeable in titles heavily reliant on PhysX for visual fidelity and gameplay.

Limited, But Growing, Support List

Nvidia is implementing “custom support” for a select number of top-played PhysX-accelerated games. While not a comprehensive solution for all affected titles, the initial list includes:

  • Alice: Madness Returns
  • Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag
  • Batman: Arkham City
  • Batman: Arkham Origins
  • Borderlands 2
  • Mafia II
  • Metro 2033
  • Metro: Last Light
  • Mirror’s Edge

The company has also indicated plans to add support for Batman: Arkham Asylum in the first part of 2026. However, Nvidia has not committed to supporting the full range of over 40 games identified by Resetera forum members as being affected by the initial removal of PhysX support.

Driver Update and Future Outlook

Gamers can download the new Game Ready driver (version 591.44) from Nvidia’s website or through the Nvidia app to enable the restored PhysX functionality. While the current support list is limited, this update represents a significant step towards addressing the concerns of the gaming community.

Despite the positive response to this fix, it appears a full restoration of PhysX compatibility across all older titles is unlikely. Nvidia’s focused approach suggests a prioritization of the most popular and actively played games, leaving many older titles potentially unsupported.
