‘Of Beasts and Birds’ awards Pilar Adón the National Storytelling Award

‘Of beasts and birds’, the third novel by Pilar Adón (Madrid, 1971) has earned the narrator, poet and translator the National Narrative Prize, awarded each year by the Ministry of Culture and endowed with 30,000 euros. ‘Of beasts and birds’ (Galaxia Gutenberg, 2022)’ had previously received the Critics’, Umbral and Cálamo awards. “It is the novel that has given me the most satisfaction and it is an immense joy to receive an institutional award like this,” congratulated the writer who novels about belonging and guilt.

The jury highlighted “the great originality, beauty, poetic richness” of Adón’s novel and “the poetic force of his language.” “It is a story told in a way that is as fantastic as it is recognizable,” the ruling added. “Written in an impeccable style that at times borders on lyricism, it manages to immerse the reader in a disturbing, suffocating and dreamlike atmosphere,” he maintained.

The ruling also highlighted the “singular voice” of Pilar Adón, who “outside of fashions and trends, and with a sublime capacity to imagine, builds atmospheres and environments of extraordinary nature that are absolutely captivating.”

Adón author of the novels ‘Las efímeras’ and ‘Las hijas de Sara’. Her of the story books ‘The Submerged Life’, ‘The Cruelest Month’ -for which she was named New Fnac Talent- and ‘Viajes Innocents’ -Critical Eye Award for Narrative-. She also wrote the illustrated story ‘Eternal Love’ and the collections of poems ‘Gives Pain’, ‘The Orders’, ‘Animal Mind’ and ‘The Hunter’s Daughter’.

He graduated in Law from the Complutense University of Madrid. ‘Of beasts and birds’ previously received the Critics’ Award, the Francisco Umbral Award for Book of the Year and the Cálamo Otra Mirada Award. His work is included in story anthologies such as ‘Actual Spanish Story’ (Cátedra, 2014), ‘Mar de piranhas’ (Menoscuarto, 2012), ‘Siglo XXI’ (Menoscuarto, 2010) and ‘Pequeñas Resistencias 5 (Páginas de Foam, 2010).

He has translated Barbara Baynton’s book of stories ‘Studies of the Wild’ (Impedimenta, 2018) into Spanish; the essay ‘The Tree’, by John Fowles, (Impedimenta, 2013), the novels ‘Innocence’ (Impedimenta, 2013) and ‘The Beginning of Spring’ (Impedimenta, 2011) by Penelope Fitzgerald; ‘Picnic at Hanging Rock’ (Impedimenta, 2010) by Joan Lindsay, the book of articles ‘Combatant France’ and the novel ‘Sanctuary’ (Impedimenta, 2009 and 2007) by Edith Wharton; Christina Rossetti’s book of short stories ‘Reasonable Similarities’, and Henry James’ novel ‘The Liar’.

The jury was chaired by María José Gálvez Salvador, general director of Books, Comics and Reading of the Ministry of Culture and Sports; and Jesús González González, deputy general director of Promotion of Books, Reading and Spanish Literature, has acted as vice president.
