Symbol of the quays of the Seine if ever there was one, the second-hand booksellers have won. For months, the Paris prefecture had been trying to chase them away, in the name of security, to be able to organize the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games. But faced with discontent, and for lack of a “consensual and reassuring solution”, Emmanuel Macron gave up the operation.

Tuesday February 13, it is assured by the Élysée: “The President of the Republic asked the Minister of the Interior and the Paris Police Prefect that all book sellers be preserved, and that none of them be forced to be moved.” A big victory for the owners of the timeless green boxes.

For months, they no longer knew where to stand, as they were tossed between false promises and half-hearted support. So much so that on January 19, the Cultural Association of Booksellers of Paris took the matter to the administrative court to challenge Paris City Hall. After which a petition was launched to prevent the dismantling of second-hand booksellers; it collected more than 185,000 signatures.

Finally, if the opening ceremony of the Games takes place on the Seine, it will be necessary “that the security system is adapted accordingly”in the words of Emmanuel Macron.
