by time news
Muscat: Omani authorities have decided to give more jobs to Omanis in the government and private sectors, where the indigenization efforts in the labor sector continue to be strong. It has been decided to find employment for 33,000 Omanis in various fields this year. The Ministry of Labor has planned to phase out expatriates from the posts currently occupied by expatriates and give those jobs to natives. This is a decision that will have a big impact on the expatriates of the country.

23,000 Omanis employed in six months

The Ministry of Labor stated that 23,000 Omanis were able to get jobs in various sectors in the first half of this year. Last month, Oman’s Ministry of Labor banned foreign workers from working in 207 job sectors. It has been decided to fire the expatriates currently working in these places and appoint Omanis there. The action is taken in the context of severe unemployment among natives in the country.

Indigenization increased in five job sectors

Meanwhile, data released by the Oman National Center for Statistics and Information stated that indigenization is progressing well in the country’s five main economic sectors. Banks, oil production, telecommunications, insurance and the hospitality industry have seen the most indigenization.

The most indigenization is in the banking sector

Most of the indigenization has been done in the commercial banks of the country. Currently, the rate of indigenization in this region is 94.4 percent. In 2020, its rate was 93.7 percent. According to the National Centre, more than 11,000 Omanis work in banks in the country. The rate of Omanization is 88.1 percent among oil and gas companies, which ranks second in terms of indigenization. In 2020, it was 85.5 percent. Currently more than 17,000 natives are working in this sector.

Insurance agents are all Omanis

The massive drop in oil prices during the Covid-19 pandemic has created a major crisis in the oil production sector, which has also reflected in the sector’s employment to a large extent. But they solved the crisis to some extent by dismissing the expatriates who worked in these companies. Of the total 3,764 employees in the telecom sector, 3,479 are Omanis. In the insurance sector, the level of indigenization was 78.8 percent in 2020, but now it has increased to 81.9 percent. It is estimated that 2,463 of the 3,006 people working in the region are Omanis. Statistics also show that all insurance agents are natives.
