In commemoration of International Women’s Day, the Ombudsman, Carlos Camargo Assis, made a public call to ratify the universal cause of women, recognizing their rights and vindicating the achievements achieved in different areas. This day, Camargo Assis pointed out, is an opportunity to reflect on the challenges facing gender equality and to avoid setbacks in the achievements achieved so far.

During the year 2023, the Delegate for Women’s Rights and Gender Affairs of the human rights entity, through its Gender Duties, attended to and processed 8,719 cases of gender-based violence and violence due to prejudice in the country. This figure represents an increase of 92.4% compared to 2022, when 4,530 cases were attended to.

The Ombudsman expressed his concern about extreme cases of violence, such as femicides, which show alarming levels of cruelty and humiliation against women. She mentioned tragic events such as that of Valentina Trespalacios in Bogotá, as well as the cases of Michel Dayana González in Cali and Diana Carolina Serna in La Unión, Valle del Cauca, which have shaken Colombian society.

Carlos Camargo Assis emphasized the importance of continuing to work to guarantee women the right to a life free of discrimination and violence. He called on society not to give up on this cause and highlighted that the autonomy of women is a worthy recognition of their equality in an egalitarian culture.

In this context, the Contigo app has become a fundamental tool for the care, advice and registration of cases of gender-based violence, violence due to prejudice and human trafficking. The Ombudsman’s Office has shown a significant increase in the number of complaints through this application, which reflects the need to continue working to protect women’s rights in Colombia.
