DECRYPTION – This is a disappointment for the dairy industry engaged in this strict mode of production and high production costs.

Almost unimaginable! Chosen for environmental but also often economic reasons, organic production has proven to be much less profitable in recent months for certain sectors. This is the case with milk. According to data from the interprofession (Cniel), the standard price of French conventional milk paid to the producer reached 395 euros in March for 1000 liters, against 453 euros for a tonne of organic milk.

By integrating the quality premiums, the price of conventional milk even climbed to 420 euros per ton, against 470 euros for organic milk. That is a differential of 50 euros. “This one was more like 100 to 140 euros the previous four or five years,” recall the economists of Cniel, who believe that the price of conventional milk could continue to rise.

This is a real disappointment for the producers involved in this very strict mode of production, with much higher production costs. The phenomenon illustrates the chain effects of settlement…
