Oncological diseases occupy a leading position in terms of mortality in Russia

Oncological diseases are one of the most common causes of death in Russia, said Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova in her greetings to the participants of the XII All-Russian Forum of the Interregional Public Movement “Movement Against Cancer”.

“Unfortunately, malignant diseases still occupy a leading position in terms of mortality both in our country and around the world, and this terrible disease can only be countered by joining forces,” said Golikova (quoted by RIA Novosti).

She recalled that since 2018 Russia has been implementing the federal project “Fight against Cancer”. The oncology service faces serious challenges, including reducing the mortality rate. This can be achieved only by increasing the availability and quality of oncological care, Golikova noted.

According to the Accounts Chamber, in the nine months of last year, malignant neoplasms were detected in 791,389 Russian citizens. At the same time, in several regions, the proportion of patients in whom oncology was detected at a late stage significantly exceeded the national figure (19.3%). In Dagestan, this proportion is 35.06% of all patients who received a diagnosis of oncology for the first time in the region. In Tuva – 35.55%, Ulyanovsk region – 35.86%, Smolensk region – 40.81% and Udmurtia – 42.19%.

At the end of January, Rosstat reported an increase in mortality in Russia in 2021 by 15.1%, to 2.4 million people. According to the agency, last year the natural decline in the population of Russia amounted to 1.04 million people, in 2020 – 688,700 people. The birth rate in Russia in 2021 decreased by 2.3% and amounted to 1.4 million people.
