European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced Thursday from Beirut an aid worth one billion euros in support of “stability” in Lebanon, relying on the “cooperation” of the authorities to combat refugee smuggling operations that have recently witnessed an increase towards Cyprus.

The visit of the European official, accompanied by Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides, to Beirut comes at a time when Nicosia recently returned migrant boats that set off irregularly from Lebanon, and in the wake of Beirut repeatedly demanding the international community to return Syrian refugees to their country, after the fighting stopped in several Syrian governorates.

Von der Leyen said during a press conference following her meeting with Cypriot President and Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati, “I can announce a financial package worth one billion euros for Lebanon, which will be available from this year until 2027” in order to contribute to “economic and social stability.”

Addressing the authorities, she added, “We count on your good cooperation to prevent irregular migration and combat migrant smuggling,” referring to irregular migration boats that depart from the coast of Lebanon.

She also affirmed the European Union’s determination to support the Lebanese army and security forces by “providing equipment and training on border management.”
