Green NCAP tests periodically evaluate different car models to determine their emissions and energy efficiency in real driving conditions and with more stringent tests than those legally required of manufacturers. And rate them on a scale of zero to five stars.

In its latest edition, only two electric vehicles (the Volkswagen ID.5 and the Nissan Ariya) have obtained the five possible stars in the last test of Green NCAPan international initiative promoted by public administrations, universities and mobility clubs that measures the environmental impact of automobiles.

Among the Green NCAP participants are the RACC, as a member of the International Automobile Federation (FIA), and up to twenty independent organizations and laboratories from eight European countries.

This initiative was born in 2019 and has already evaluated more than 100 electric, hybrid and combustion vehicles of different brands and types. Its objective is to promote the manufacture of less polluting, more efficient vehicles with less environmental impact.

The latest wave, corresponding to the first half of this year and whose results were released this Thursday, evaluates 15 vehicles, including models with different types of propulsion (electric, gasoline hybrid, diesel and gasoline).

The Volkswagen ID.5, with a 100% electric motor, has received the highest rating (10 points out of 10) in air quality and emissions and very high ratings in energy efficiency (9.4 points) and greenhouse emissions (9.4 points). 6), which have allowed this vehicle to obtain the maximum distinction of five stars with which Green NCAP distinguishes only the most environmentally sustainable models. The study praises that, despite the weight of the model (more than 2,100 kilos, due to a large volume of batteries that provide a range of more than 500 kilometers in real traffic conditions), the consumption values recorded are among the lowest of the electrical models analyzed.

The Nissan Ariya also gets five stars. It has achieved the highest score in air quality (10 out of 10), while its energy efficiency has been rated with 9.3 points and its low greenhouse emissions have earned 9.5 points out of 10 possible. Green NCAP highlights that the measured battery capacity reached 89.6 kWh, a value higher than that officially declared by the manufacturer and that, when loaded with 11 kW, the overall efficiency of the battery is 91.6% of the energy drawn from the electrical grid, which represents “the highest value measured by Green NCAP so far.”

Three stars

In the three-star category, the model with the highest score is the BMW 2 Series Coupé, which stands out for its clean air index and very efficient control of particle emissions, but falls well below the requirements of Green NCAP in the greenhouse gas index.

The Renault Austral stands out for its hybrid propulsion system, which reduces fuel consumption despite its large size. This savings also means it gets a better greenhouse gas index than other non-hybrid SUVs of similar size.

The Kia Picanto, which demonstrates good fuel consumption performance, and the Opel/Vauxhall Mokka, with a diesel engine that has good particle emissions control, have also been evaluated.

Two and a half for combustion cars

With two and a half stars are the Dacia Sandero Stepway and the Mercedes Benz C-class, in both cases with acceptable results in terms of the air quality emissions index, but with low scores in the greenhouse gas index, which They have a lot of room for improvement in their performance.

In this category there is also the Volkswagen T-Roc, which stands out for its good emissions score on air quality (7.7 out of 10), the best Green NCAP result for a car with a combustion engine so far. On the contrary, the model has shown ample room for improvement in the greenhouse gas index.

The same happens with the Volvo

For its part, the Ford Fiesta has proven good energy efficiency performance for a conventional gasoline car, although it requires improved control of pollutant emissions, especially ammonia.

Renault has passed the test with the Mégane and the Austral FP

In the case of the BMW2 Series Active Tourer, the low score is due to the energy efficiency index, although the consumption values are, in general, good.

The least efficient

The car with one of the lowest energy efficiency scores in the first half of the analysis is the Ford Tourneo Connect, rated two stars mainly for its design, which directly influences fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

The Volkswagen Touran has also received a two-star score to demonstrate room for improvement in particle and ammonia control, in addition to also failing the greenhouse gas index.

Green NCAP has also assessed the van Hyundai STARIA which, with a large size and weight and a diesel engine, places it at improvable levels of energy efficiency and greenhouse gases with an overall score of one star.
