Anti-riot agents of the National Police repelled with tear gas a march of members of the opposition Independent Liberal Party (PLI), who are demonstrating to demand free and transparent elections in November 2016.

“Riot police attack us with tear gas bombs,” the PLI said on the social network Twitter.

In addition, the political organization reported that several deputies were detained and beaten, among them Eduardo Montealegre, former presidential candidate of the PLI and who led the demonstration.

The PLI, the main opposition force in Nicaragua, was heading to the headquarters of the Supreme Electoral Council (CSE), in the center of Managua, to publicly present its demands.

So far the demonstration has not been canceled and residents from different parts of Nicaragua are expected to arrive, reported the PLI.

In November 2016, Nicaragua will elect president, vice president, 90 national deputies and 20 representatives to the Central American Parliament.

The Supreme Electoral Council is accused by the opposition of altering the results of the 2008 municipal elections and the 2011 presidential elections, in favor of the ruling Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN), headed by President Daniel Ortega. EFE
