The General Council of Dentists together with the Spanish Dental Foundation (FDE) has launched a campaign of educational videos on oral health. The objective is to raise awareness among the population of the importance of seeking truthful sources of information and avoiding hoaxes about oral health.

Dr. María Núñez, member of the Advice and president of the College of Dentists of Lugo, in an interview with EFEsalud, explains this initiative.

Videos against disinformation

In addition to offering audiovisual content on the care of our mouth, the campaign aims to fight against the hoaxes that exist in this regard on digital platforms and social networks.

“Creating these YouTube videos and social networks brings us closer to people, especially the youngest, who access these contents very easily. Nowadays, with one click we are all on social networks. Therefore, for us it is very important that people keep their oral health in mind and take care of it,” says Dr. Núñez.

Clear and concise message

The doctor explains that the central objective of the campaign is to offer truthful information on dental topics that generate doubts among the population. As they are short videos and focused on being played on social networks, the message is clear and brief, giving only the necessary data in each case.

Likewise, the dentist indicates that the aim is to create informed and aware patients: “In the end, an informed patient will be much more aware of the importance of their oral health and that of their family, and that improves the health of the general population. That is one of our objectives.”

General recommendations

In addition to the advice offered in the videos, Dr. Núñez details some basic guidelines for oral health care. Thus, she remembers that we should go to the dentist at least once a year, unless we suffer from some pathology.

“We must go to the check-up according to what the dentist tells each person. If there are periodontal patients, that is, those who have periodontal disease, the protocols right now agree that they should go for a check-up every four or six months. Another case, for example, is in children with a high prevalence of cavities, who also have to attend consultations less frequently. We consider that a good guideline for a healthy patient may be once a year, although it is also true that now we are increasingly focused on saying twice a year,” says the doctor.

The #Yovoyaldentista campaign

The campaign has a total of 12 videos that answer the most frequently asked questions about our oral health. According to the doctor, they are also the ones that patients do the most in consultations.

The videos are published every week, having started on October 30. For now, we find two videos published on his channel. The order of the topics will be the same as the proposed list.

How often should you go to the dentist? How does pregnancy influence oral health? Why is it important to take care of baby teeth? How do cavities occur? How do periodontal diseases occur? How important are tobacco and alcohol to oral health? How should we act when a tooth breaks? Why is it important to replace lost teeth? What should be done to maintain good oral health? What foods are healthy and which are not for oral health? What is malocclusion? What is its importance? Children’s orthodontics

The videos appear every week on the YouTube page of the General Council of Dentists and are shared, in turn, on their social media profiles.
