Former Priest Sentenced to 10 Years in Prison for Sexual Abuse in Slovakia
A landmark verdict has been reached in northern Slovakia, with former priest Peter Križian convicted of sexually abusing a 12-year-old girl and sentenced to 10 years in prison. The victim testified that the abuse began while she was a sixth-grade student at a church school where Križian served as the head pastor. She detailed how the abuse unfolded, stating the initial encounter occurred at the priest’s residence.
During the proceedings, Križian offered a controversial defense, claiming, “I fell in love, and even then a person fails, a guy just woke up in me.” However, following the sentencing, he expressed remorse and a willingness to accept the punishment, stating, “I sincerely regret it and I really want to apologize to the victim, I never wanted to hurt her.”
Legal experts have emphasized the importance of this decision. A representative for the victim stated the sentence could act as a deterrent to other potential perpetrators. Prosecutor Alexandra Mesiarkinová described the ruling as sending a “clearly sent message.” The victim’s defense attorney further asserted that the verdict offered solace not only to the survivor but also to the wider public.
The victim received the news with a mix of emotions, accepting the verdict “with tears, but with relief,” acknowledging she hadn’t anticipated such an outcome. She concluded with a message of hope, stating, “It’s really worth fighting for and there are a lot of people who will support you.”
