The Orlando Magic became the first team in the 2026 NBA playoffs to win a road game, upsetting the top-seeded Detroit Pistons 112-101 in Game 1 of their first-round series on Sunday at Little Caesars Arena.
Paolo Banchero led Orlando with 23 points, nine rebounds and four assists, while four other Magic starters reached double figures. Franz Wagner scored 19 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter and added five rebounds and four assists. Wendell Carter Jr. And Desmond Bane each contributed 17 points, five rebounds and five assists. Jalen Suggs finished with 16 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Detroit’s offense collapsed outside of Cade Cunningham, who scored a game-high 39 points on 13-of-27 shooting. Tobias Harris was the only other Piston in double figures with 17 points. Jalen Duren managed just eight points and seven rebounds, shooting 3-of-4 from the field. The Pistons shot 40 percent overall and 31 percent from three-point range, scoring 16.8 points below their season average.
Orlando never trailed after Suggs’ opening three-pointer. The Magic led 35-27 after one quarter and withstood a Pistons rally that tied the game in the third quarter. Wagner’s fourth-quarter surge helped Orlando extend its lead to 108-96 with three minutes left, prompting an early exodus of Detroit fans.
The Magic forced 11 steals and recorded six blocks, holding Detroit to its lowest offensive output of the season. Orlando also held an advantage in paint points and offensive rebounds while matching Detroit’s bench production.
For Orlando, the victory ended a 0-7 road playoff record for Banchero, Wagner and Suggs, who had lost four games in Cleveland in 2024 and three in Boston the previous spring. Suggs missed last year’s postseason due to knee surgery.
Detroit entered the game as an 8.5-point favorite, but became the first No. 1 seed in the NBA’s play-by-play era (since 1997-98) to never hold a lead in a playoff opener. The Pistons were 29-of-38 from the free-throw line.
Orlando advanced to the playoffs after a dramatic play-in tournament, losing their first game to Philadelphia before defeating Charlotte 121-90 to clinch the eighth seed. The win gave the Magic a 1-0 series lead and positioned them to become just the eighth No. 8 seed in NBA history to win a first-round series, joining the 2022-23 Miami Heat as the most recent team to achieve the feat.

Game 2 is scheduled for Wednesday in Detroit.
Orlando’s balanced attack exposed Detroit’s offensive fragility
The Magic’s five double-figure scorers contrasted sharply with Detroit’s reliance on Cunningham. Orlando’s offensive balance forced the Pistons to defend multiple threats, preventing them from concentrating solely on containing Cunningham. This defensive diffusion contributed to Detroit’s 40 percent shooting and 31 percent from three, both season-lows for the team in postseason play.
Detroit’s bench and role players failed to provide necessary support
Beyond Cunningham and Harris, no Piston reached double figures. Jalen Duren, expected to be Detroit’s second scoring option, managed only eight points despite efficient shooting. The lack of secondary scoring left Cunningham isolated, and the Pistons’ inability to generate offense beyond their star became a decisive factor in the loss.

Magic’s defensive discipline disrupted Pistons’ rhythm
Orlando’s 11 steals and six blocks came despite Detroit entering the game with the NBA’s second-best defensive rating. The Magic’s active hands and interior presence disrupted passing lanes and challenged shots, holding the Pistons to well below their offensive average. This defensive performance was a continuation of Orlando’s play-in success, where they held Charlotte to 90 points in a win-or-go-home game.
Historical context underscores the rarity of Orlando’s road victory
Orlando became the first team in the 2026 playoffs to win a road game, breaking a trend where higher-seeded home teams had won each of the first six playoff matchups. The victory also ended a personal road playoff curse for Orlando’s core trio, who had not won a postseason road game since entering the league.
What does this indicate for the Pistons’ chances in the series?
Detroit will need significant contributions from players beyond Cade Cunningham to avoid falling into a 0-2 hole. The Pistons have two days to adjust before Game 2, but their lack of offensive depth was exposed in Game 1.
Can the Magic sustain this level of play throughout the series?
Orlando’s balanced scoring and defensive intensity were key to the upset. If they can maintain similar offensive distribution and defensive pressure, they pose a serious challenge to Detroit’s title aspirations.
