He turned himself in to the police after 48 hours of disappearance. A 22-year-old man who escaped from the Orléans court on Monday when he had just been sentenced to a year in prison presented himself at the city police station on Wednesday evening, we learned from parquet.

The young man “was placed in police custody on charges of violent escape,” said the public prosecutor of Orléans, Emmanuelle Bochenek-Puren, confirming information from The Central Republic.

When he escaped, the defendant had just been found guilty and sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment and the total revocation of a six-month suspended sentence previously handed down against him.

“When the deliberations were announced, I heard a loud boom and I had time to get away. He fell in the place I occupied,” said Christiane Aminata Diop, his court-appointed lawyer, on Monday.

Convicted of minor offenses

“He slipped through the hole in the box. He landed in my place and took off running,” she explained. “There were prison administration officers in the box, but there was no police officer at the hearing” for immediate appearance, said Me Diop.

According to the prosecution, the young man, already convicted several times for “medium intensity” offenses, appeared Monday for attempted break-in, receiving stolen property and contempt of a person holding public authority, the while recidivating.

Of Russian nationality and of Chechen origin, he is in the process of being regularized, according to his lawyer.
