McLaren Clarifies Viral Clip of Oscar Piastri After Singapore Grand Prix Victory
McLaren Racing has moved to dispel speculation surrounding a viral video appearing to show Oscar Piastri disconnecting his team radio following their second consecutive Formula 1 constructors’ championship win at the Singapore Grand Prix. The incident, captured on an onboard camera, sparked online debate about the Australian driver’s reaction to praise from team CEO Zak Brown.
The controversy arose after footage circulated showing Piastri unplugging his steering wheel as Brown began to thank him for his performance during the grueling 62-lap race at the Marina Bay Street Circuit. “Oscar, back-to-back champions! Tough race, thank you for…,” Brown can be heard saying before the audio cuts out.
However, McLaren has confirmed to RacingNews365 that Piastri had already switched off his car’s power system and was therefore unable to hear Brown’s message. A senior official stated that the timing was coincidental and that the disconnection was a standard post-race procedure.

The team clarified that this was due to the driver fulfilling his mandatory media obligations at the time. “It wasn’t our plan to celebrate then but appreciative of F1 to make that possible for the team,” a company release explained, adding that a full team photo, including Piastri, was taken later.
