hallgrimsson defends O’Toole Call-Up Amidst Ireland’s World cup Qualification Push

Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson has staunchly defended his decision to include uncapped defender Kevin O’Toole in the national squad for crucial upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Portugal and hungary, citing a significant shortage of available players in that position.

The Republic of Ireland face a challenging path to securing a play-off spot as the first phase of qualification nears its conclusion.

Brady and Callum O’Dowda are unavailable, while Josh Honohan is battling injury issues and Ryan Manning is suspended for the portugal match.

“He’s playing in a position that we don’t have a lot of depth in,” Hallgrimsson explained. “We are missing obviously, Robbie brady, and Ryan Manning is suspended. Callum O’Dowda is injured, Josh Honohan has been struggling with fitness in his groin.”

Ireland currently trail second-place Hungary by one point in the group standings. A favorable result from Hungary’s match against Armenia, which will be completed before Ireland’s clash with group winners Portugal, could significantly alter the landscape of their qualification hopes. Hallgrimsson’s side will need at least a point against Portugal if hungary defeats Armenia.

The manager acknowledged the challenges of integrating a new player into the squad with limited preparation time. The team will only have one full training session before facing Portugal on Thursday,as many players will be arriving from club commitments late in the week.

“It’s just the situation we have,” Hallgrimsson stated. “I have watched Kevin O’Toole play. I know he is a good player. He has been playing and starting all games for New York City FC for about three seasons now. He’s experienced, he is 26. It’s not like he is a young player we are testing. He has quality.”

Hallgrimsson revealed that O’toole has been working to secure clearance to play for Ireland for over a year. “Kevin comes in as one that just got his clearance to play for us. We’ve been watching him so it’s a good time to call him in, especially because of our situation.”

Beyond the defensive concerns, the fitness of striker Evan Ferguson is also a key worry for the Irish camp. The Roma loanee has been recovering from a knock and will be assessed ahead of the double-header.

“he’s back on the grass,he’s recovering from a knock,” Hallgrimsson said. “We would have called him in anyways to assess him. Maybe have the option of playing him only for the second game. He has been key to our goals and scoring for us.”

Celtic’s Johnny Kenny, who has recently found form with three goals in his last two games, including a goal against Rangers, was overlooked for this squad. However, Hallgrimsson confirmed Kenny remains on standby should Ferguson’s fitness prove to be a concern.

“He would be the next in line up front,” Hallgrimsson noted. “He has been scoring, looks lively and has the confidence from his coach. He’s a little bit different than the others we have.”

Looking ahead to the Portugal match at Aviva Stadium, Hallgrimsson is preparing for multiple scenarios based on the outcome of the Armenia-Hungary game.

“we have the privilege of knowing the result from Armenia playing Hungary,” he said. “Before we kick off, that game will be finished. That’s on the day we know what we need against Portugal. We will know what we need in this game against portugal before we kick off. That’s a benefit to us, but it doesn’t change the way we start and play the game.We will need to take calculated risks as the game progresses.”

The manager is confident his team can replicate the performance they delivered in Lisbon last month, despite the challenging circumstances. Ireland’s qualification fate hangs in the balance, but Hallgrimsson remains resolute in his belief that his squad can rise to the occasion.
