Owner of a personal design furniture studio: “In the beginning I went out with a tooth and an eye”

Ran Abacsis started his career as a project contractor, after studying construction engineering. Over time, he acquired skills in architectural drawing, began to respond to requests from customers and created custom furniture for them.

Ran, who fell in love with the creative process, and turning the simulations into “flesh and blood” furniture, decided to open the RANCO studio. He based his business on a unique method he developed for producing accurate simulations, which are transferred to a CNC cutting machine – which “one by one” machines large wooden panels. The final product is packed in flat packaging that allows self-assembly at the customer’s home.

Today, Ran owns a boutique factory in Moshav Beit Uziel, and supplies furniture to thousands of customers, including interior designers and architects. “Our mission is to create a fair and convenient supply chain of custom-designed furniture for all levels of the market,” says Ran. “We aim to become the leading platform in local production and change the way products are designed and created using digital and technological tools.

“Design and technology are significant tools on the way to achieving the goal, as they allow us to become more efficient, plan a precise product, examine the demand and viability while presenting it to the target audience, and go into production accordingly. This concept brings valuable results.”

The biggest challenge for him is production, but even that Ran tries to see as a positive thing. “Demand is increasing and therefore production is more massive – something that requires me to constantly think of solutions that will allow me to improve. I started as a one-person business and today we already have four production workers and we have another customer service employee.”

Over the years, Ran gained insights into the management of the company. “The most important thing I learned is to delegate authority so that I can make time for simulations and new drawings. This business requires me to be creative all the time, and in order to be able to respond to that, I also need calmness. The work is hard but I enjoy it and you can also say that I am addicted to it. I have Two pairs of little twins at home, and in the evening I try to come back and help, but sometimes in the wee hours of the night I create new drawings.”

It is true that Ran overcame the difficulties at the beginning of the journey, but there are those who still remember it. “At the beginning of my career, I was a young and inexperienced renovation contractor and I made several mistakes that damaged my credit rating. Although I reset very quickly, and today I am in a completely different place, but the banks remember that… I had a very hard time raising funds – I left with a tooth and an eye.”

Although the business was published a little before the corona, the epidemic actually did him good. “Since everything was digital, I had a very large amount of orders during this period.”

In conclusion, Ren sketches what his business will look like in a few years. “I would like to receive orders from Europe and the USA – it seems to me a natural continuation of the business. I think that any business that is based on love for the field, belief in the product and investment in it – is a business that will eventually rise and succeed. And of course you have to constantly keep learning and improving.”
