Strong Winds Disrupt Services Across Prince Edward Island

A weather system bringing damaging winds caused disruptions to services across Prince Edward Island on Monday, including school closures, health center appointment cancellations, and delays for civil service offices. While warnings have since been lifted, residents are still experiencing elevated wind speeds throughout the day.

The initial impact centered on areas facing the Gulf of St. Lawrence, but the effects were felt province-wide. Environment Canada had issued a yellow warning for Kings County, citing a significant risk from the strong winds.

School and Education Impacts

Westisle Family of Schools was fully closed on Monday due to the hazardous conditions. Students attending schools within the Public Schools Branch experienced a one-hour delay to the start of classes. Similarly, École Pierre Chiasson also cancelled classes for the day, while all other schools within the CSLF system operated on a one-hour delay.

Health Services and Public Administration Affected

Several health centers adjusted their schedules in response to the weather. In-person appointments were cancelled until 9:30 a.m. at the Tyne Valley Health Centre, O’Leary Health Centre, Alberton Health Centre, and Tignish Health Centre.

All provincial civil service offices in the West Prince area also delayed opening, with doors not opening until 10:30 a.m.

Province-Wide Wind Conditions

Although the initial warning was specific to Kings County, a CBC meteorologist, Tina Simpkin, cautioned that strong winds were impacting the entire island. “Facing out into the Gulf of St. Lawrence, that’s where we’ll find those highest gusts,” Simpkin stated. “But still, anywhere else across the Island we’ll still experience and can experience winds 50 gusting up to 80 km/h throughout the day today.”

Winds are expected to remain elevated for much of the day, gradually decreasing towards the evening and overnight hours. Residents are advised to exercise caution and secure any loose objects that could be affected by the wind.
