Palestinian Journalist Alleges Sexual Assault by Israeli Prison Guards

A former freelance journalist from the occupied West Bank has come forward with harrowing allegations of sexual assault and prolonged abuse while detained by Israeli authorities. The claims, made public by the BBC, detail a disturbing incident that occurred while the man was held without charge for 16 months. This case is likely to reignite scrutiny over the treatment of Palestinian prisoners within the Israeli justice system.
Arrest and Administrative Detention
Sami al-Saei, 46, previously worked as a journalist in Tulkarm, a town in the northern occupied West Bank. He was arrested by Israeli soldiers in January 2024 following his work assisting reporters in arranging interviews with members of Hamas and other armed groups. Following his arrest, al-Saei was subjected to administrative detention, a controversial practice allowing Israel to detain individuals without formal charges for extended periods. He was held for 16 months before his release earlier this year.
Allegations of Abuse in Megiddo Prison
While incarcerated at Megiddo prison in northern Israel, al-Saei alleges he was subjected to brutal treatment, culminating in a horrific act of sexual violence on or around March 13, 2024. According to al-Saei, guards partially stripped him and assaulted him with a baton. “There were five or six of them,” he stated. “They were laughing and enjoying it. The guard asked me: ‘Are you enjoying this? We want to play with you, and bring your wife, your sister, your mother, and friends here too.’”
He described the experience as a desire to end his life, stating, “I was hoping to die and be done from that, as the pain was not only caused by the rape, but also from the severe and painful beating.” The assault reportedly lasted 15 to 20 minutes, during which guards also inflicted pain by squeezing his genitals. Al-Saei further claims he endured near-daily beatings, but the sexual abuse occurred only once.
Israel Prison Service Response
The Israel Prison Service (IPS) responded to the allegations with a statement asserting they “operate in full accordance with the law, while ensuring the safety, welfare, and rights of all inmates under its custody.” The IPS claimed they were “not aware of the claims described, and to the best of our knowledge, no such incidents have occurred under IPS responsibility.” When pressed on whether an investigation had been launched or if medical records pertaining to al-Saei’s treatment existed, the IPS declined to comment.
Speaking Out Amidst Societal Risk
Al-Saei acknowledged the significant personal risk involved in speaking publicly about his experience, citing the potential for ostracization within the often conservative Palestinian society in the West Bank. Despite this, he felt compelled to share his story. The allegations raise serious questions about accountability and oversight within the Israeli prison system and highlight the vulnerability of Palestinian detainees.
