A mother and father who abandoned their morbidly obese daughter to die covered in maggots in Wales had their prison sentences increased this Friday (19).

The sentences of 45-year-old Alun Titford and 40-year-old Sarah Lloyd-Jones — convicted earlier this year of involuntary manslaughter against Kaylea Titford — were extended at the Court of Appeal to ten and eight years respectively.

The judges said the circumstances leading to the young woman’s death “can only be categorized as extreme”. Kaylea, who weighed nearly 300 pounds, lived in conditions described as “unfit for any animal” with clothes and bedding that weren’t washed.

The teenager, who had spina bifida and used a wheelchair, was found dead at the family home in Newtown, Powys, in October 2020, dirty and with ulcerated skin. The causes of death show that she died after suffering an inflammation and an infection by ulceration, resulting from obesity and immobility.

William Emlyn Jones KC, representative of the Office of the Attorney General (AGO), said: “By virtue of the combination of the duration of the negligence, the nature of the victim’s prolonged suffering, the extent of the victim’s vulnerability, the her parents’ absolute care and ultimately the appalling conditions in which she was left to live and die, this is an offense that fits the definition of ‘extreme’”.

Sarah Lloyd-Jones had originally been jailed for six years, while Titford was previously told he would spend seven and a half years behind bars.

Prior to the Covid-19 lockdown, Kaylea was described as “fiercely independent and a lovely, chatty girl” by people who knew her, but during the pandemic she became less and less able to move and needed a wheelchair.

A doctor said the “consequences of neglect” the young woman suffered were the worst he had seen in 30 years. The teen had not seen a medical professional for nine months before she died.
