From time to time, some innovations in evangelical churches do not please the faithful and more traditional leaders, and controversies settle around discussions about the appearance of the temple or accessory furniture, such as the pulpit.

During a sermon, pastor José Orisvaldo, president of the Assemblies of God in Alagoas, expressed his dissatisfaction with this trend present in many churches, which call for the use of the drum as a contemporary decoration item, as in the case of churches that use walls black.

“In many churches they took away the pulpit. They took away this piece of furniture called the pulpit. In some, there is even a ton, a barrel. Have you ever heard that there is a church that has a cask, a barrel? That right there is a mockery of the enemy of our souls, because according to those who understand chemistry, the barrel […] it is no longer useful. You cannot store beans, you cannot store corn, you cannot store wheat, because it is contaminated. The maximum is to put garbage. Tonel is not a place to put the Bible. Drum is a place to put rubbish”, opined Pastor Orisvaldo.

Then, the pastor pondered that his motivation is to preserve the Assembly tradition: “I am speaking in the Assembly of God. If anyone is listening to me, and has another opinion, please, I’m speaking to the Assembly of God. We will never put a drum, because a drum is not a place for the Word, a drum is a place for garbage.”

“Here is the pulpit, from where God speaks to His Church. John Calvin said that the pulpit is the throne from which God speaks to His Church. See this piece of furniture here? This piece of furniture is the throne from which God speaks. Praise the name of the Lord forever!” added the pastor.

One of the main characteristics of classic Pentecostals is zeal and reverence, and in this context, Pastor Orisvaldo contextualized his concern: “This is not a place for chatting, this is not a place for podcasts, this is a place for advertising, for making the kerygma, of announcing the holy and glorious Word of God to the Church. Can you say amen in Jesus name? There are subtle things that seem like nothing, that seem silly, but are very serious, that have a hidden message, that have something behind them, that have an evil message behind them”.

Taking advantage of the moment, the pastor also showed that he was aware of the lack of content that can be noticed in many preachings in churches: “Jesus taught and preached. Preach the Word. Paul said ‘preach the Word’. Get the text. The best sermons is the textual sermon. It’s you taking the text and dissecting that text piece by piece for the Church. Preach the Word. Paul didn’t say ‘preach about the Word’; Paul said ‘preach the Word’. There are people who do not preach the Word. He preaches on the Word of God.”

“Father Antônio Vieira, the greatest sacred orator in Colonial Brazil. He wasn’t evangelical, but we have to give the paddle a hand. His sermons are beautiful. He has doctrine that we don’t agree with, but they are classic sermons and have a lot of useful stuff. And he said that Jonah preached the same message for 40 days. And there are preachers who in 40 minutes preach 40 messages ”, he concluded.
