Pearl Abyss launched the first paid downloadable content for Crimson Desert, titled Charting the Unknown, on October 29, 2026, expanding the open-world action-adventure game across land, sea, and underwater areas.
Pearl Abyss Adds Character Epilogues and New Activities
Pearl Abyss PR and marketing director Will Powers detailed the expansion features during an appearance on Dropped Frames, explaining that the studio wanted to treat Damiane, Oongka, and Kliff as full protagonists to make all three characters better-rounded. Powers noted that Oongka’s epilogue story stands out as a personal favorite among the new additions, which also encompass romance options, new strongholds, boss rushes, business management, expanded housing, and new minigames with locals. To access these new stories, players must deal with political conflicts across a massively expanded Pywel.
The new expansion brings fresh storylines for three primary characters—Kliff, Oongka, and Damiane—treating them as full protagonists. According to Pearl Abyss representatives, these character narratives function effectively an epilogue
detailing what each individual experiences after the events of the base game. Players can explore land routes and, for the first time in the title, navigate oceans and dive into underwater ruins and shipwrecks.

Damiane, Oongka, and Kliff, you didn’t really get to explore a lot of their backstory, a lot of their motivations during the main game. Now, it’s effectively an epilogue for all three characters.

Players Must Complete Main Quests for Epilogues
Official Steam achievements data indicates that 10.8% of players have unlocked the Expert Storyteller achievement for completing all main quests. Meanwhile, open-world exploration, naval activities, and shipbuilding are tied to establishing the Greymane camp during Chapter 3, allowing players to engage with maritime features much earlier.
Accessing the new content requires specific game milestones depending on the feature. Completing the main campaign is mandatory to unlock the character-specific epilogue stories, preventing spoilers for those still progressing through the primary narrative. The content does not rely on a single universal unlock requirement. Underwater exploration is available without additional story progression, though players are warned that breath is limited and suitable gear is recommended for longer dives. Shipbuilding is tied to setting up the Greymane Camp at Howling Hill and completing related ship questlines, while other upgraded housing systems and features require distinct prerequisites like Greymane Camp upgrades and faction quests.
Meritz Securities Projects Revenue Growth from DLC Sales
Meritz Securities estimated in a report that Pearl Abyss’ third-quarter consolidated revenue and operating profit reached 119.6 billion won and 33.5 billion won, respectively, and projected that fourth-quarter figures would rise to 159.4 billion won in revenue and 50.4 billion won in operating profit once DLC revenue is reflected. The base game generated $427 million in revenue and over 6 million sales. In the second quarter, however, game revenue declined about 49 percent to 136.1 billion won.
The release arrives as Pearl Abyss tests long-term monetization strategies for the open-world title. Industry observers note that the DLC serves as a test for whether the developer can supplement a revenue structure previously concentrated on one-off blockbuster success and build a stable revenue base.

Expansion Launches Globally Across Multiple Platforms
Ahead of its debut, the add-on surged to the top of Steam’s global top-selling games chart following a single delay from an original October 16 release date, which the developer pushed back by about two weeks to ensure higher quality and a stable gameplay experience. The expansion launched globally at 3 PM PT / 6 PM ET on October 29, 2026, across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Mac, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, alongside an update for the base game.
Xbox players can test the base experience through a 5-hour free trial running from October 29, 2026, through January 7, 2027. The base game also earned nominations at the Golden Joystick Awards 2026, including Game of the Year, PC Game of the Year, and Best Soundtrack. To celebrate the launch, Pearl Abyss introduced a promotional Twitch Drops campaign spanning two rounds in late October and November, offering in-game items such as Pirate Lanterns, Pirate Eyepatch, Pirate Sword, parrots, and Tailwind ship figureheads, sterns, and sails for viewers who watch three hours of streams.
